Hotel energy management, room by room

iHotel meters each room’s electricity separately, works out consumption between two readings for each stay, and costs it at the hotel’s own tariff. When a room is vacant, unneeded loads are switched off and restored when the guest returns. It runs with the GRMS guest room management system, because metering and control happen in the room.

How consumption is worked out

Consumption is the difference between two meter readings. If a meter is reset, a device is swapped or a room is re-assigned to another meter, the reading is flagged as untrustworthy and is not costed. So the system never reports “this room used nothing” when it does not actually know that.

What the system switches off

When a room is vacant, its lighting, air conditioning and non-essential sockets are switched off. The refrigerator, the safe and the essential air conditioning stay powered. A room with no main switch that the system can control is left as it is, because it could not be restored.

A baseline before any saving is claimed

We measure consumption before and after installation and compare it with a baseline the hotel agrees. We do not show a saving percentage until the hotel has a measurement that supports it.

What the hotel provides

A meter for each room, fitted to the room’s circuits. The type is confirmed during the site survey. The hotel’s actual electricity tariff, so the cost shown is correct.

Questions

Common questions on this topic

How much does an empty room cost in electricity?

It depends on the loads connected to the room and on the hotel’s tariff. The system calculates it from the room’s measured consumption, and we do not give a general figure before real measurement.

Does the system switch off the refrigerator?

No. The refrigerator, the safe and the essential air conditioning stay powered.

What happens if the power goes off?

When the power returns, the room’s state is resynchronised with the system, so the room knows its current status.
